Pesten bryter ut i djungeln och Diana följer med FN:s läkarteam till Bengali för att hjälpa till. Hennes brev till Fantomen kommer dock på villovägar och han vet inte att hon arbetar i Wambesi-byn, under medicinmannens illvilliga blickar. Djungelns medicinmän ser sina positioner hotade av de vita läkarna. Wambesis medicinman lurar Diana att begå helgerån mot oxguden Moogoo och kräver att de vita ska prövas med glödgade järn. Fantomen ingriper och tillsammans med Wambesis prins byter han medicinmannens makt. Ryktet sprider sig genom djungeln och medicinmännens makt bryts.
