John och hans vän blir gravskändare av tristess och samlar på sig olika artefakter. De reser till Holland och hittar en jadeamulett i en grav och tar med den tillbaka till England. De blir dock hemsökta av fladdermöss och John dör av fladdermusbett. Hans vän bränner huset med deras samlingar och reser tillbaka till Holland för att lämna tillbaka amuletten i graven den hittades i. Det hjälper dock inte och han tar livet av sig med en revolver.
