Riccardo Burchielli
Riccardo Burchielli was born on 27 February 1975 in Italy. He is best known for his gritty, detailed artwork on the DC/Vertigo series *DMZ*, which marked his debut in the American comic book market. Burchielli’s style blends realistic figure work with dense, atmospheric backgrounds, often emphasizing the decay and tension of war-torn urban environments. His collaboration with writer Brian Wood on *DMZ* defined much of his early U.S. career, and he later worked with Wood on *Northlanders*, bringing a stark, historical weight to Viking-era tales. Beyond Vertigo, Burchielli contributed to *Conan the Barbarian*, *Dial H*, and digital-first series like *Batman: Arkham Unhinged*, as well as a handful of *Justice League* issues. His run on *DMZ* earned him a reputation for depicting chaos and humanity with equal clarity, and he remains a key figure in the 2000s Vertigo stable. Burchielli’s later work has been sporadic, but his influence on the visual language of modern political comics endures. He has not received major individual awards, though *DMZ* was nominated for several Eisner Awards.
