“Ghosts”

DMZ #4 from Vertigo's 2006 run presents one of the series' most atmospheric covers, courtesy of Brian Wood — a stark, near-white expanse of snow dominates the image, with a darkened Manhattan skyline and bare winter trees silhouetted against a murky, overcast sky above, while a small cluster of figures pushes through the blizzard at the bottom of the frame. The title "Ghosts" says it all: those distant, half-visible people moving through the frozen demilitarized zone feel genuinely haunting. It's a quietly arresting image that captures the eerie, desolate mood Brian Wood and Riccardo Burchielli have been building in this series.
