Part four of "Metal The Death Black," Brian Wood and Riccardo Burchielli's Viking-era arc in DC/Vertigo's Northlanders, arrives in December 2010 with a cover by Massimo Carnevale that pulses with moody blues and warm amber light deep inside what appears to be a rocky canyon or cave passage. A lone warrior sprints forward with a raised blade while a group of armed figures — spears and weapons at the ready — moves in pursuit behind them, the whole scene rendered with a painterly looseness that feels both urgent and atmospheric. It's the kind of cover that communicates tension without spelling anything out, making it hard not to want to see what comes next.
