Hammerhead
A street thug left for dead with a shattered skull, Joseph was nursed back to health by a doctor obsessed with the 1920s gangster era, who reconstructed his head with a steel-reinforced flat cranium. Taking the name Hammerhead, he clawed his way up through the Maggia crime families.
Few villains in Marvel's Bronze Age rogues' gallery carry quite the menacing, old-school swagger of Hammerhead, who crashed onto the scene in The Amazing Spider-Man #130 in 1974, courtesy of Gerry Conway and Ross Andru. A creature of the criminal underworld through and through, he's spent over five decades haunting the pages of The Amazing Spider-Man, Daredevil, and Ultimate Spider-Man, racking up 144 catalog appearances and three key-issue moments that collectors have flagged as essential. He runs in genuinely dangerous company β sharing pages with the likes of Kingpin, Tombstone, and Lonnie Lincoln, which tells you everything about the shadowy, mob-flavored corner of Marvel he calls home. If you love your Spider-Man stories with a hard-boiled, crime-noir edge, Hammerhead is exactly the kind of enduring heavy you need on your pull list.
