The Transformers #39
The tagline says it all — "Fort Max Gets the Shaft!" — and José Delbo and Dave Hunt's cover delivers a wonderfully strange vision to match: the massive Autobot Fortress Maximus drifts damaged through star-filled space, pierced by a glowing red lance of energy, while a transparent dome containing a tiny tropical island rockets away from Earth below. A second large Transformer looms in the background at right, making this 1988 Marvel issue feel genuinely cosmic in scope. Bob Budiansky's "The Desert Island of Space!" promises exactly the kind of off-world adventure the cover teases so well.

Spike Witwicky takes Galen's place and is bonded with Cerebros, as well as with Fortress Maximus. The Targetmasters along with Fortress Maximus storm the Decepticons island base to rescue Buster, but the island turns into a huge rocket ship and heads into space. Fortress Maximus follows, but is shot and severely damaged, so Spike disengages from Cerebros and makes contact with Buster. Shockwave arrives to kill Spike, but Spike activates Fortress Maximus' weapons by radio and shoots down Shockwave, who appears to burn up in Earth's atmosphere. The rocket with Buster disappears into space.
