About this Issue

Teen Titans vol. 3 #37 is the debut issue of M'gann M'orzz, Miss Martian — a character who would go on to anchor the acclaimed Young Justice animated series and become one of DC's most recognizable young heroes of the 21st century. The issue also delivers the first Post-Infinite Crisis appearance of a reconstituted Brotherhood of Evil and provides a new, darkly revisionist origin for the Brain, tying his feud with Niles Caulder directly into the Doom Patrol's founding tragedy. As the concluding chapter of writer Geoff Johns's 'New Teen Titans' arc — the team's first major storyline after the One Year Later jump — it reshuffles the roster, sends Beast Boy back to the Doom Patrol, and ends on an emotionally charged moment between Robin and Wonder Girl that carries the shadow of Superboy's death. Few single issues of this era accomplish as much world-building in one sitting.

In "The New Teen Titans Part 4," the Teen Titans team up with the Doom Patrol to confront the Brotherhood of Evil, leading to a shocking revelation: the Brain claims The Chief is to blame for his current state. Written by Geoff Johns and illustrated by Tony Daniel, with cover art by Tony Daniel, this 2006 issue delivers a tense, character-driven clash that deepens the mystery behind the Brotherhood’s origins.

History

The issue was written by Geoff Johns and illustrated by Tony S. Daniel, with inks by Kevin Conrad, and published on July 5, 2006, with an August 2006 cover date. It lands squarely inside DC's 'One Year Later' initiative, the publishing line-wide jump set one year after Infinite Crisis, which gave Johns room to introduce an entirely new supporting cast for the Titans — Kid Devil, Ravager, Zachary Zatara, and Miss Martian — to fill the gap left by the deaths and departures of Superboy and Kid Flash. According to a Newsrama interview cited across fan wikis, Johns originally wanted Supergirl for the team's Martian Manhunter analogue slot but was told she was unavailable due to her commitment to the Legion of Super-Heroes book, which directly led him to invent Miss Martian as a younger White Martian counterpart to J'onn J'onzz. The issue and its surrounding arc were later collected in the Teen Titans: Titans Around the World trade paperback alongside issues #34–36 and #38–41.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • First appearance (cameo) of Miss Martian (M'gann M'orzz), a White Martian posing as a Green Martian, created by writer Geoff Johns and artist Tony S. Daniel; she goes on to become a central character in the Young Justice animated series voiced by Danica McKellar.
  • Story title: 'The New Teen Titans, Part Four' (also solicited under the tagline 'Hell Hath No Fury… Like Kid Devil!'); concludes the four-part 'New Teen Titans' arc running through issues #34–37.
  • Published July 5, 2006 (cover date August 2006) as part of DC's 'One Year Later' initiative, the first post-Infinite Crisis issue of the series to drop the '1 Year Later' banner from its cover.
  • The Brain's in-continuity origin is revealed for the first time in this issue: he claims Niles Caulder sabotaged him out of professional jealousy, and further alleges that Robotman's steel body was originally designed for him — not Cliff Steele.
  • Steve Dayton removes the Mento Helmet and ousts Niles Caulder as leader of the Doom Patrol, resolving the subplot of Caulder's manipulative hold over his team that had built through the arc.
  • The issue closes with Robin (Tim Drake) revealed to be secretly attempting to clone the deceased Superboy (Conner Kent), and a grief-driven kiss between Robin and Wonder Girl (Cassie Sandsmark).
  • Miss Martian's creation was editorially driven: Geoff Johns was barred from using Supergirl (then tied to the Legion of Super-Heroes) and invented M'gann M'orzz as the team's Martian Manhunter analogue instead.
  • Reprinted in the Teen Titans: Titans Around the World trade paperback (DC Comics, Vol. 6 of the Johns-era collection series), which bundles the 'New Teen Titans' (#34–37) and 'Titans Around the World' (#38–41) arcs together.
