The issue falls squarely within Geoff Johns' landmark tenure on Teen Titans vol. 3, which he launched in 2003 and wrote through issue #45 — a run DC later collected in the 'Teen Titans by Geoff Johns Omnibus.' Issue #39 was part of the 'Titans Around the World' story arc, scripted by Johns with pencils by Tony Daniel and inks by Kevin Conrad, the team that had anchored the series through its post-Infinite Crisis 'One Year Later' relaunch beginning at #34. The 'One Year Later' initiative was a line-wide DC publishing strategy that jumped all ongoing titles forward one year in continuity following 2006's 52 weekly series, deliberately leaving the intervening year unexplored to generate mystery — and Johns used 'Titans Around the World' as his mechanism to gradually unpack that gap by having the current team track down former members scattered across the globe. Miss Martian herself was created because DC's editorial prevented Johns from using Supergirl, who was committed to the Legion of Super-Heroes title at the time, prompting Johns and Daniel to design a Martian Manhunter analog who could fill a similar power niche while carrying her own identity themes.
