About this issue

This 1883 Beadle & Adams dime novel features "Barranca Bill, the Revolver Champion; or, The Witch of the Weeping Willows," a Nevada-set story by Captain Mark Wilton. The narrative follows William Lincoln, nicknamed Barranca Bill, superintendent of the Silver King Mine in the silver town of Comet Camp. During an evening smoke, a desperate fugitive crashes through his window seeking protection from lynchers from Ramrod Bar who accuse him of murder. Bill recognizes the man as his long-lost brother Horace, presumed dead. Moved by their unexpected reunion and Horace's protestations of innocence, Bill hides him in a secret room built into his sleeping quarters, relying on his Dutch servant Hans to maintain silence. As lynch mobs search the town with torches, Bill prepares to defend his brother. A parallel narrative introduces Vivian, daughter of politician Cephas Brown, as a rough visitor demands an audience with her father.
