Rune Andréasson

Born on 11 August 1925 in Sweden, Rune Herbert Emanuel Andréasson spent more than four decades shaping children's comics for Swedish readers and, eventually, audiences across multiple languages. He died on 15 December 1999.

Andréasson entered the field in 1944, developing a string of original characters rather than working on licensed or inherited properties. His early output included features such as "Lille Rikard och Hans Katt," "Pellefant," "Teddy," "Åsnan Kal," and several others, each aimed squarely at young readers. Interestingly, he also made brief appearances as an actor in the late 1940s, including a small role in Ingmar Bergman's *Music in Darkness* and animation work for Bergman's *Summer Interlude*.

His most enduring achievement arrived in the 1960s with "Bamse," a bear billed as the world's strongest, whose adventures carried a consistent educational tone. The feature grew into one of Sweden's most widely read comic books after its dedicated title launched in 1973, and it has remained popular well beyond Andréasson's own involvement. From the 1970s onward he delegated the artwork to other illustrators while continuing to write scripts and maintain firm editorial oversight — most notably refusing paid advertising in a publication directed at children and keeping tight control over merchandising.

Andréasson retired in 1990, transferring the comic to publisher Egmont, leaving behind a body of work spanning 164 credited issues across titles including *Bamse*, *Teddy*, and *Pellefant & Co*.
