Malcolm Jones III
Malcolm Jones III was an American comic book artist born in 1959 and died in 1996. He is best remembered as the inker on *The Sandman*, where his precise linework and textured finishes enhanced the pencils of collaborators such as Mike Dringenberg, Kelley Jones, and Colleen Doran. His inking also defined the gritty visual tone of Denys Cowan's pencils on *The Question*. Active from 1987 onward, Jones contributed to over 90 issues, with his most credited work appearing in *Essential Vertigo: The Sandman*, *Young All-Stars*, *The Shroud*, and *Spider-Man: Power of Terror*. His style—marked by a clean, illustrative approach that balanced shadow and detail—made him a sought-after collaborator in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Jones’s untimely death at 37 cut short a career that had already left a distinct mark on DC’s darker, more literary titles. Though he did not receive major awards during his lifetime, his contributions to *The Sandman* remain a key part of that series’ visual legacy, and his work continues to be studied by fans of the era’s ink-heavy storytelling.
