Kevin Smith
Kevin Patrick Smith was born on August 2, 1970, in New Jersey. He first gained fame as the writer-director of the low-budget comedy *Clerks* (1994), where he also played the silent half of the stoner duo Jay and Silent Bob. Those characters became the anchor of his “View Askewniverse,” a shared universe of films set in his home state, including *Mallrats*, *Chasing Amy*, *Dogma*, and *Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back*. Beyond filmmaking, Smith carved a notable comics career beginning in 1998. He is best known for his runs on *Green Arrow* and *Daredevil*, where he brought a sharp, dialogue-heavy sensibility to superhero storytelling. He also wrote *Green Hornet*, *Batman: The Widening Gyre*, and the *Marvel Knights* imprint, often collaborating with artists like Joe Quesada and Walt Flanagan. Smith co-created the character Onomatopoeia for *Green Arrow*. In later years, he expanded into podcasting with his SModcast network, owned the comic shop Jay and Silent Bob’s Secret Stash, and directed television episodes for *The Flash* and *Supergirl*. His work has earned him a devoted fanbase and recognition for revitalizing mainstream comics with a personal, irreverent voice.
