Ernie Schroeder was an American comic book artist, commercial illustrator, and sculptor, born Ernest C. Schroeder on January 9, 1916. He is best remembered for his work on Hillman Periodicals’ muck-monster the Heap, which he drew and co-wrote from 1949 to 1953, helping to shape that influential character. Schroeder’s career in comics began in the mid-1940s, and he became a steady hand across several publishers. His signature style blended clean, energetic linework with a flair for both adventure and horror, often collaborating with writers and editors at Hillman and Harvey Comics. Beyond the Heap, he is associated with Hillman’s Airboy and Harvey’s Shock Gibson and Spirit of ’76. Over his active years from 1944 into the 2000s, he was credited on 41 issues, with his most frequent titles including *Airboy Comics*, *Roundup*, *Speed Comics*, and *Black Cat Comics*. After his comic book work, Schroeder turned to commercial illustration and sculpture, continuing to create art well into his later years. He passed away on September 20, 2006. His contributions to the muck-monster genre and Golden Age adventure comics have earned him a lasting place among the era’s reliable craftsmen.
