In "The Battle Flag of General Horta," a desperate patriot's final act unfolds as his car is driven off a cliff by his own second in command. As he tumbles to his death, General Horta presses a battle flag bearing the name of his betrayer into the hands of the Heap, setting a silent, ominous chain in motion. The flag passes from the Heap to the village fool, who carries it to the Elders—though what the Elders will do with it remains unknown.
