“The Return of Zzed, Part 1”

In "The Return of Zzed, Part 1," British engineer George Danbury ventures into the swamps of the Heap’s birthplace to drill for oil, facing resistance from locals who fear the land’s cursed waters. A 14-year-old local boy steps forward to help, unaware that the ancient Heap is quietly aiding them both. With Nazi sabotage looming and the villagers blaming the swamp spirits, the Heap must act—before the truth is buried under fire and fear. Written and illustrated by Ernest Schroeder, with cover art by the same, this 1950 Hillman classic blends adventure and mystery in a tale where legend and reality collide.

Near the birthplace of the Heap, British engineer George Danbury discovers oil in the swamps....but the peasants call it the swamp's evil liquid, and will not aid the engineer in drilling for the oil. A young lad age 14 volunteers and assists Danbury, but both are unaware that the Heap is helping too. Then the Nazis destroy the wells through delayed action bombs and the peasants think the explosions were caused by the swamp spirits. The Heap helps clear up some of the misunderstandings and destroys the remaining bomb.
