Al Gabriele
Al Al Gabriele was an American comic book artist active during the Golden Age, best known for his work on early Captain America and Sub-Mariner stories for Marvel Comics' predecessor, Timely Comics. He was born Alfred J. Gabriele on December 22, 1916, and died on July 12, 1992. His last name is sometimes misspelled "Gabrielle" in reference works, but the vast majority of his credits use the single-"L" spelling.
Gabriele entered the comics field in the 1940s, contributing to the nascent superhero boom. He is credited as co-creator of several Timely heroes, including Black Marvel, Miss America, and possibly the Whizzer. His signature style was clean and dynamic, well-suited for the action-packed adventure stories of the era. He frequently collaborated with writers and editors like Stan Lee, and his art appeared across multiple titles, including *Young Allies*, *The Human Torch*, and *Blue Bolt*.
Beyond his superhero work, Gabriele drew for *Blonde Phantom Comics* and *National Comics*. His career spanned the Golden Age, with his credits in our catalog covering 55 issues from 1940 onward. While he did not receive major industry awards during his lifetime, his contributions to the foundational years of Marvel Comics have earned him a lasting place in comic book history, remembered for helping shape the visual language of early superhero storytelling.
