“Uncle Sam Needs You!”

This December 1942 Quality Comics wartime issue puts Uncle Sam front and center in full patriotic fury, blazing away with a machine gun atop what appears to be a flag-draped vehicle while enemy aircraft fill the sky above him. A red-haired boy at his side urges him on with the rallying cry "Make 'em say uncle, Sam!" — a punchy bit of wartime spirit that perfectly captures the mood of the home front. Al Gabriele's cover work is energetic and bold, and with Otto Binder scripting the interior, "Uncle Sam Needs You!" sounds like exactly the kind of red-white-and-blue adventure this era delivered at its best.
