Modred the Mystic
A young sorcerer from Arthurian Britain, Modred sought the power of the Darkhold—an ancient tome of dark magic—to combat evil, but the corrupt tome claimed his soul, leaving him forever bound to its malevolent influence and the demon Chthon.
Stepping out of the Bronze Age shadows in Marvel Two-in-One #33 (1977), courtesy of Marv Wolfman and Ron Wilson, Modred the Mystic is one of Marvel's more enigmatic sorcerous figures — a character whose mystical presence has quietly persisted across nearly five decades of storytelling. His adventures have wound through the pages of Spider-Woman, The Avengers, and The Mighty Avengers, placing him in remarkable company alongside the likes of Spider-Man, Captain America, Iron Man, and the Wasp, and he even counts the Avengers among his team affiliations. With 39 catalog appearances spanning 1977 to 2024 and at least one key collector issue to his name, Modred is the kind of deep-cut Marvel mystic who rewards the curious reader willing to dig into the richer, stranger corners of the Bronze Age and beyond.
