Marvel Chillers #1
☆ Be the first to review + Add to your collection — Join freeMarvel Chillers #1 marks the debut of Modred the Mystic, a Bronze Age sorcerer whose roots in Arthurian legend gave Marvel's supernatural corner a distinctly mythological anchor at a time when the publisher was aggressively expanding its horror and magic titles. The issue also introduced The Other — an emissary of the Elder God Chthon — making it the first, unnamed appearance of Chthon's influence on the Marvel Universe, a thread that would later wind through the Scarlet Witch's entire history. By tying Modred's origin to the Darkhold (already established in the Werewolf by Night line), the creative team deepened that grimoire's mythology and set up years of crossover storytelling. The series itself serves as a small but telling snapshot of Marvel's mid-1970s anthology strategy, launching new supernatural characters in short-run showcases before pivoting the title toward Tigra starting with issue #3.

The story was plotted by then-editor-in-chief Marv Wolfman and scripted by Bill Mantlo, who had only recently transitioned from colorist to writer at Marvel — making this one of his earliest writing credits on the superhero side of the line. Interior art was pencilled by John Romita Sr. and inked by Frank Giacoia, with Ed Hannigan also credited on the splash page, and Yong Montano listed among the artistic contributors; Wolfman received an on-book 'inspiration' credit per the Grand Comics Database. Editor Len Wein oversaw the issue, and the cover was painted by Gil Kane and Tom Palmer. The series ran bi-monthly and was cancelled after only seven issues, with the Modred feature concluding after issue #2 when the book shifted its focus entirely to Tigra.
