Doctor Phosphorus
Alexander Sartorius was a doctor whose body was transformed into a radioactive, phosphorus-based being after a nuclear reactor accident left him perpetually burning and unable to safely touch others. He subsequently became a recurring villain plaguing Gotham City and Batman.
Glowing with an eerie, radioactive menace, Doctor Phosphorus is one of DC's most visually striking villains, introduced during the Bronze Age in 1985 by writer Len Wein. Over four decades he's haunted the pages of Detective Comics, Batgirl, and especially Starman, sharing those stories with heavyweights like Batman, Robin, Green Lantern, and Starman himself β a rogues' gallery rΓ©sumΓ© that speaks to his staying power. With 31 catalog appearances spanning all the way to 2025, he's no one-shot curiosity but a persistent, phosphorescent thorn in the side of DC's finest. If you're drawn to Bronze Age villainy with a genuinely unsettling aesthetic, Doctor Phosphorus is absolutely worth tracking down.
