In "Detective #26," a young man driven by the legacy of Thomas and Martha Wayne takes up the mantle of the Silver Ghost, hoping to carve his own path in Gotham’s shadowed streets. In "As Always," Batman’s absence leaves Gotham in the hands of Commissioner Gordon, who finds himself contemplating the hero’s place in a world increasingly shaped by cosmic forces and metahuman threats—especially as the sun vanishes and the Justice League answers the call.

The editorial context was turbulent: DC co-publisher Dan DiDio had departed the company in February 2020, and the COVID-19 pandemic had disrupted production schedules, forcing the cancellation of the ambitious 5G/Generations line-wide initiative; Detective Comics #1027 absorbed at least one story — Dan Jurgens and Kevin Nowlan's 'Generations: Fractured' — that had originally been destined for the now-scrapped Generation One anthology.
