About this Issue

Detective Comics #1027 marks Batman's 1,000th appearance in the series that bears his name — a direct callback to Detective Comics #27 (1939), the issue that introduced the character and gave the company behind DC Comics its very own name. As a 144-page anthology published on September 15, 2020, it brought together twelve original short stories by some of the most accomplished writers and artists in the medium's modern era, offering a cross-section of every dimension of the Batman mythos — detective procedural, family drama, cosmic horror, and villain showcase — in a single volume. It also carries genuine narrative weight as the first-appearance issue of Officer Christopher Nakano, a Gotham City cop who would go on to become a recurring figure in the Batman line. Finally, the issue preserves a fragment of DC's cancelled 5G publishing initiative: the story 'Generations: Fractured' by Dan Jurgens and Kevin Nowlan was salvaged from the aborted Generations event and served as a prologue to the subsequently published Generations: Shattered #1.

In "Blowback," Grant Morrison and Chris Burnham launch a striking new chapter in the Batman mythos, exploring the origins of a young vigilante driven to action by the tragic deaths of Thomas and Martha Wayne. Taking inspiration from classic detective work and costumed crusaders, he embraces the identity of the Silver Ghost, only to find his first case—a murder investigation involving a chemical mogul—quickly overshadowed by the arrival of a more familiar figure. Andy Kubert’s cover captures the tension of this pivotal moment, while Burnham’s dynamic art and Fairbairn’s moody colors set a haunting tone for a story that redefines what it means to carry on a legacy.

History

The issue was shepherded by Batman Group Editor Ben Abernathy alongside editors Paul Kaminski and Dave Wielgosz, who assembled what DC described as a celebration of 1,000 Batman appearances in Detective Comics since his debut in issue #27. The editorial context was turbulent: DC co-publisher Dan DiDio had departed the company in February 2020, and the COVID-19 pandemic had disrupted production schedules, forcing the cancellation of the ambitious 5G/Generations line-wide initiative; Detective Comics #1027 absorbed at least one story — Dan Jurgens and Kevin Nowlan's 'Generations: Fractured' — that had originally been destined for the now-scrapped Generation One anthology. The main cover was by Adam Kubert, and the issue launched an extensive variant program including ten 'Friends and Foes' covers pairing Batman with allies and enemies, by artists such as Jim Lee, Frank Quitely, Stanley 'Artgerm' Lau, J. Scott Campbell, Olivier Coipel, Adam Hughes, Gabriele Dell'Otto, Jim Cheung, and Lee Bermejo, plus numerous retailer-exclusive variants.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • First appearance of Officer Christopher Nakano, a Gotham City police officer who later becomes mayor, introduced in Mariko Tamaki and Dan Mora's story 'A Gift,' which also ties into the concurrent 'Joker War' storyline.
  • The issue is a 144-page anthology of twelve original stories, framed as a celebration of Batman's 1,000th appearance in Detective Comics since his debut in Detective Comics #27 (March 30, 1939); published September 15, 2020, with a November 2020 cover date.
  • Writers include Greg Rucka, Grant Morrison, Scott Snyder, Tom King, Peter J. Tomasi, Brian Michael Bendis, James Tynion IV, Marv Wolfman, Dan Jurgens, Kelly Sue DeConnick, Matt Fraction, and Mariko Tamaki — representing both decades-long Batman veterans and first-time contributors to the character.
  • Artists include Brad Walker, Eduardo Risso, Chris Burnham, Ivan Reis, Riley Rossmo, John Romita Jr., Emanuela Lupacchino, Walt Simonson, Chip Zdarsky, David Marquez, Dan Mora, Kevin Nowlan, and Bill Sienkiewicz, among others.
  • Dan Jurgens and Kevin Nowlan's story 'Generations: Fractured' was originally created for DC's cancelled Generations/5G publishing initiative; it serves as the first chapter of what became the Generations: Shattered event and was later reprinted in the DC Comics: Generations collection.
  • Grant Morrison and Chris Burnham's contribution, titled 'Detective #26,' functions as a meta-textual prequel to Detective Comics #27, imagining a pulp-era predecessor hero in Gotham on the eve of Batman's emergence — a deliberate callback to the Kane/Finger origin story.
  • Tom King and Walt Simonson's story 'Legacy' depicts a possible future death of Bruce Wayne from poison administered by Dr. Phosphorus; Simonson originally designed Dr. Phosphorus for his first appearance in Detective Comics #469.
  • The issue was subsequently collected in a hardcover Deluxe Edition (Batman: Detective Comics #1027: Deluxe Edition), which added pin-up pages by José Luis García-López, Jamal Campbell, Jim Cheung, and Lee Bermejo; Tom King and Walt Simonson's 'Legacy' was also reprinted in the Batman/Catwoman collection.
