Chop-Chop
Chop-Chop debuted in Military Comics #1 (1941) as a comedic Chinese sidekick character published by Quality Comics (later acquired by DC). Originally portrayed as comic relief accompanying the aviation hero Blackhawk, he was a product of wartime-era racial caricature common to 1940s comics.
Few characters carry as much Golden Age history — or as complicated a legacy — as Chop-Chop, who first appeared in Military Comics #3 in 1941, brought to life by the legendary Will Eisner and Chuck Cuidera. A fixture of the beloved Blackhawk series across DC's long publishing history, Chop-Chop has shared countless adventures alongside Blackhawk, Hendrickson, Chuck, Olaf, and Andre, woven into the fabric of one of comics' most enduring wartime ensembles. With a publication history stretching an extraordinary 82 years — from the Golden Age trenches of Military Comics all the way through to 2023 — and appearances in All-Star Squadron among others, this character's longevity alone speaks to a remarkable staying power in the DC universe. Two key collector issues mark the highlights of a catalog worth exploring for any fan serious about the Golden Age roots of American comics.
