Blackhawk #144

From DC's January 1960 issue comes Blackhawk #144, cover-penciled by Dick Dillin and inked by Chuck Cuidera, promising the story "The Underworld Sportsmen." The cover pulls you right into the peril: a yellow-costumed figure looms above as a section of chain-link fence transforms into a massive spiked globe bearing down on two Blackhawk squadron members and a third trapped figure — the caption bluntly warns there's no way to escape it. It's a wonderfully tense, imaginatively menacing setup that captures everything that made this era of DC adventure comics so compulsively readable at just a dime a copy.
