Thor by Straczynski & Gillen Omnibus #[nn]
☆ Be the first to review + Add to your collection — Join freeThe 2023 Thor by Straczynski & Gillen Omnibus collects the complete post-Ragnarok revival of Thor that redefined the character for the modern era. J. Michael Straczynski's bold choice to anchor Asgard as a floating city above Broxton, Oklahoma introduced a sustained 'gods among us' dynamic that directly influenced the storytelling DNA of Marvel's Thor films and later MCU productions — the town of Broxton itself was referenced in Loki Season 2. Straczynski's run also delivered the first extended portrayal of Loki in female form, a character development with lasting resonance in both comics and live-action. Kieron Gillen's concluding chapters, which had been omitted from the earlier 2010 omnibus edition, are included here for the first time in hardcover omnibus format, making this 2023 volume the definitive single-volume presentation of the entire era.

Thor Vol. 3 launched in September 2007, pairing television and comics writer J. Michael Straczynski with French artist Olivier Coipel, fresh off House of M; the title received an Eisner Award nomination for Best Continuing Series in 2009. Straczynski departed before completing his intended story arc — widely attributed to his unwillingness to subordinate the book to the Siege crossover event — and Kieron Gillen was brought in to finish the run, writing Thor #604–614 with artists Billy Tan, Richard Elson, and Dougie Braithwaite. The 2023 hardcover omnibus, assembled by Jeph York, is an expanded successor to the earlier 2010 JMS-only omnibus, correcting that volume's abrupt ending by incorporating Gillen's full conclusion alongside the complete Siege tie-in material.
Trivia · 8 facts
- Primary writers: J. Michael Straczynski (Thor #1–12, #600–603) and Kieron Gillen (Thor #604–614); primary penciler for the JMS portion: Olivier Coipel; Gillen's artists include Billy Tan, Richard Elson, and Dougie Braithwaite.
- Collects: Fantastic Four (1998) #536–537; Thor (2007) #1–12, #600–614; Thor Annual (2009) #1; Thor Giant-Size Finale; Siege (2010) #1–4 and Director's Cut; Siege: Loki; New Mutants (2009) #11; Secret Invasion Aftermath: Beta Ray Bill – The Green of Eden; Beta Ray Bill: Godhunter #1–3; and material from Dark Reign: The Cabal One-Shot.
- Thor Vol. 3 #1 (Sept. 2007) marks the first appearance of Beth Sooner and introduces the concept of Asgard rebuilt as a floating city above Broxton, Oklahoma — the first time the Asgardian home realm was placed on American soil as an ongoing story setting.
- This run features the first extended portrayal of Loki in female form: reborn after Ragnarok, Loki takes the body originally intended for Lady Sif, establishing the character's gender fluidity in mainstream Marvel continuity.
- Straczynski's Thor revival directly influenced the 2011 Thor feature film, on which he holds a writing credit; the film adapted the core premise of an ancient Asgardian god arriving in a small American town.
- The 2023 omnibus is the first hardcover omnibus edition to include Gillen's full run (Thor #604–614) alongside the JMS material; the earlier 2010 Thor by J. Michael Straczynski Omnibus ended at Thor #603 and did not include Gillen's chapters or the complete Siege tie-ins.
- The Thor Vol. 3 series reverted to legacy numbering beginning at #600 with what would have been Vol. 3 #13, reflecting the total count of published issues across all three volumes of the series.
- The omnibus was collected/edited by Jeph York and published by Marvel with a final order cutoff of August 14, 2023.
