The Transformers #41
This June 1988 Marvel issue makes an immediate impression with its sprawling cover — penciled by José Delbo and inked by Dave Hunt — depicting a staggering assembly of Transformers in both robot and vehicle modes scattered across what appears to be a rocky, debris-strewn surface, with Earth looming in the star-filled background and jets streaking overhead. The sheer density of the image is remarkable, cramming in dozens of Autobots and Decepticons — robots, tanks, jets, cars, and more — in a chaotic tableau that suggests something truly massive is at stake. Titled "Totaled!" and produced by the creative team of Bob Budiansky, José Delbo, Danny Bulanadi, Nel Yomtov, and Bill Oakley, this issue promises the kind of large-scale Cybertronian conflict that made Marvel's Transformers run so compelling in 1988.

The Autobots led by Fortress Maximus meet up with the main body of Autobots led by Grimlock, and Grimlock challenges Fortress Maximus to a death duel for the right to lead the Autobots. Knowing that Fortress Maximus is currently not strong enough, Blaster (who is currently being held prisoner by Grimlock), offers to fight in his place. The two factions land on the Moon and the two begin their duel. However, the Decepticons decide to attack and trash the Ark. Grimlock and Blaster make their peace, but Goldbug escapes with three other Autobots, taking the disk with Optimus Prime's memory.
