Superman / Batman #33

The conclusion to "The Enemies Among Us" arrives in this 2007 issue, and the cover by Phil Jimenez and Andy Lanning sets the stakes with stomach-dropping clarity: an enormous alien face — bearing the combined Superman/Batman chest symbol on its forehead — looms open-mouthed, with a crowd of colorful heroes and villains alike trapped and crushed between its massive teeth. The sheer scale of the threat feels overwhelming, with recognizable figures including what appears to be Supergirl among the many struggling figures caught in that terrifying grip. Writer Mark Verheiden, artist Joe Benitez, and inker Victor Llamas bring this arc to a close, and that cover alone makes it easy to see why this team had readers eager to find out how — or whether — anyone gets out.
