Savage Dragon #26 serves as the dramatic payoff to the 'Gang War' arc (issues #22–26), a pivotal stretch of Erik Larsen's ongoing solo run in which the fragmented Vicious Circle — leaderless after the Overlord's death — tear Chicago apart before Dragon and a coalition of heroes finally quell the chaos at Stronghold Penitentiary. The issue's closing pages mark CyberFace's formal ascension to command of the Vicious Circle, a power shift that would define the book's direction for years to come. It also delivers the first appearance of Abner Cadaver, a recurring figure in the series' mythology. As the concluding chapter of the arc later collected in Savage Dragon Vol. 6: Gang War, this issue closes one of the more structurally ambitious multi-issue stories in early Image history.

History

The 'Gang War' three-parter (issues #24–26) was produced entirely by Erik Larsen functioning as sole creator, writer, penciller, and inker — the same unbroken creative ownership that would characterize the series for its entire run. Issues #24 and #25 brought in Keith Giffen as co-plotter and Jeff Matsuda as penciller, making #26 notable as a return to Larsen handling all storytelling duties solo for the arc's conclusion. Jannie Wong served as editor, with lettering by Chris Eliopoulos and colors by Reuben Rude and Antonia Kohl.

Mace dons the OverLord armor during the Stronghold prison riot but is incapacitated by an internal failsafe Overlord built into the suit, preventing any other user from operating it.
The combined hero force — Dragon, Freak Force (Dart, Barbaric, Horridus, Mighty Man, Rapture, Ricochet), SuperPatriot, Liberty, and Justice — storms Stronghold Penitentiary to suppress the breakout, during which SuperPatriot fatally shoots the villain BodyCount.
The issue closes with a pin-up by Erik Larsen featuring Dragon, Barbaric, She-Dragon, and WildStar.
