About this Issue

Savage Dragon #14 (September 1994) serves as the debut of UnderMind, a cybernetic telepath who goes on to become a persistent Vicious Circle foot soldier across decades of the series. The issue also seeds one of the series' most unsettling long-form plot threads: a leech-like creature attaches itself to the back of Dragon's neck, setting in motion a body-horror storyline that would ripple through subsequent issues. Published mid-run in the early Image era, it exemplifies Erik Larsen's commitment to dense, ongoing continuity — a serial approach that kept Savage Dragon one of only two original Image titles to remain continuously in print, and the only one never to change its writer-artist. The issue also advances the Frank Darling survival thread and marks an early in-continuity appearance for She-Dragon (Amy Belcher), a character who would eventually headline the title herself.

History

Erik Larsen wrote, pencilled, and inked every issue of the ongoing Savage Dragon series from its 1993 launch, maintaining sole creative control as part of the creator-owned ethos central to Image Comics' founding. Issue #14 arrived during the series' first sustained action arc, roughly bracketed by the 'Possessed' storyline later collected in Savage Dragon Volume 4. Larsen's hands-on production model — he also handled plotting and letters coordination — meant each issue was a direct, unmediated expression of his storytelling vision, an increasingly rare arrangement in mainstream superhero publishing at the time.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Published September 30, 1994 by Image Comics; story, pencils, and inks by Erik Larsen.
  • First appearance of UnderMind: a cybernetic-bodied, telepathic Vicious Circle member who recurs throughout the series.
  • A leech-like creature (The Wicked Worm) affixes itself to Dragon's neck — a key plot beat seeding a major subsequent storyline involving Vicious Circle manipulation.
  • Skullface discovers that Frank Darling is still alive and confronts him, advancing a long-running survival subplot.
  • Lurch battles Dragon, Star, Rapture, and Vanguard before being taken back to Vanguard's spaceship — a crossover-adjacent sequence involving the alien hero.
  • She-Dragon (Amy Belcher) appears; though her comics debut was in The Savage Dragon vs. The Savage Megaton Man special (1993), this is among her early ongoing-series appearances.
  • Kill-Cat (Alan Williamson) and Kid Avenger (Mark Osborn) appear; Kill-Cat's first appearance was in Freak Force #7, so this is an early guest role in the main Dragon title.
  • Collected in: Savage Dragon Volume 4: Possessed (collects #12–16 and WildC.A.T.s #14); Savage Dragon Archives Volume 1 (collects #1–21 of the ongoing series and WildC.A.T.s #14, in black and white); and Savage Dragon: The Ultimate Collection Volume 2 (collects #9–21 and WildC.A.T.s #14).
