Savage Dragon #140 is the opening chapter of the 'United We Stand' arc, one of the most ambitious shared-universe crossovers in Image Comics history, uniting Dragon, Invincible, Spawn, Witchblade, and ShadowHawk against the rogue Superman-analog Solar Man — characters whose publishers (Skybound, TMP/Todd McFarlane Productions, Top Cow, Shadowline) rarely crossed over in a single ongoing series. The issue marks the first appearance of Dixie Dexter, daughter of Rex Dexter and Horridus, a character who goes on to become a Freak Force member in her own right, and also debuts the Solar Man Robots as antagonists. History

Erik Larsen served as sole writer, penciler, and inker, maintaining the total creative control he had exercised over Savage Dragon since the series launched in 1993 as one of Image's founding titles. The story grew directly out of the Solar Man subplot Larsen had been seeding across the preceding issues, framing a rogue godlike hero as a vehicle for commentary on authoritarian state violence. The 'United We Stand' arc was subsequently collected in a trade paperback published by Image (ISBN 9781607062967), confirming the story's standalone appeal beyond monthly readership.
