The 2003 New Mutants series was launched by married writing team Nunzio DeFilippis and Christina Weir, who came to Marvel primarily from independent work at Oni Press, and was situated editorially within the creative renaissance sparked by Grant Morrison's concurrent New X-Men overhaul. The series was designed to reframe original-team veterans like Dani Moonstar and Karma as adult mentors recruiting a second generation, with editors MacKenzie Cadenhead and C.B. Cebulski overseeing the project. Interior pencils for issue #5 shifted from series opener Keron Grant to Mark Robinson, with a rotating inking team of Scott Elmer, Wayne Faucher, and Aaron Sowd, while Joshua Middleton's distinctive painted covers provided visual consistency across the run. The thirteen-issue series was brief by design; it fed directly into New X-Men: Academy X, and all the student characters introduced — including Elixir — were carried forward into that title and its successors.
