New Mutants #4
New Mutants vol. 2 #4 (titled "Freaks and Geeks," cover-dated October 2003) is the issue in which Karma — Xi'an Coy Manh, a founding member of the original New Mutants — formally rejoins the Xavier Institute as its librarian and a faculty mentor, closing a years-long absence from the school and anchoring her as a recurring adult presence in the X-Men line for the next several years. The issue also contains the first appearance of David Alleyne, the telepathic knowledge-mirroring mutant who would go on to become Prodigy, a lasting figure in Marvel's young-mutant continuity through the Academy X era and beyond. Critically, this issue is widely cited as the moment Karma's queerness was made explicit in-continuity — a landmark for LGBTQ+ representation in mainstream superhero comics, particularly significant because Karma is also one of Marvel's most prominent Southeast Asian characters.

The series was written by the husband-and-wife team of Nunzio DeFilippis and Christina Weir, whose prior work at Oni Press led Marvel to hand them the relaunched New Mutants title in 2003. Issue #4 was penciled by Keron Grant with inks by Rob Stull and Rich Perrotta, colored by Avalon Studios, and edited by C.B. Cebulski and Stephanie Moore under editor-in-chief Joe Quesada. The series ran for 13 issues before being retooled as New X-Men: Academy X in 2004, with DeFilippis and Weir remaining on the book; their run ultimately introduced nearly two dozen new mutant characters into the X-Men franchise.
