The second volume of New Mutants launched in July 2003, written by the married creative team of Nunzio DeFilippis and Christina Weir — who had been brought to Marvel by editor C.B. Cebulski after he read their creator-owned work Skinwalker. The series ran for 13 issues before being relaunched as New X-Men: Academy X in July 2004, a transformation driven by the end of Grant Morrison's tenure on New X-Men and editorial desire to center the next-generation Xavier Institute cast more prominently. Issue #8 was pencilled primarily by Carlo Barberi with additional pencils by Khary Randolph, and featured a cover by Chris Bachalo; it shipped with a January 2004 cover date and was edited by Mike Marts, Stephanie Moore, and Cory Sedlmeier under editor-in-chief Joe Quesada.
