The series was written throughout its entire thirteen-issue run by the co-writing team of Nunzio DeFilippis and Christina Weir, who had built their reputations primarily through independent work at Oni Press before taking on this Marvel assignment. Issue #7 marked the handoff from penciler Keron Grant, who had handled the first arc, to Carlo Barberi, who penciled issues #7 through #11; Juan Vlasco inked and Ian Hannin and Rob Ro colored. The cover was provided by Chris Bachalo, whose distinctive style anchored the visual identity of the series across all thirteen covers regardless of the interior artist. The book launched in mid-2003 running parallel to Grant Morrison's ongoing New X-Men and operated, as one contemporary observer noted, in 'the shadow' of that influential run; it was quietly retooled and relaunched as New X-Men: Academy X in July 2004, with issues #7–13 going uncollected in trade paperback for over a decade before finally appearing in the 2018 complete-collection paperback.
