New Mutants #3
New Mutants vol. 2 #3 (September 2003) is the debut issue for two characters who would go on to become significant fixtures in the X-Men line: Santo Vaccarro (Rockslide) and Kevin Ford (Wither), both of whom were introduced and given their origins here. The issue is also notable as one of the earliest appearances of Amara Aquilla / Magma in her tentative reintegration into the Xavier Institute's world after years of sporadic publication, marking a storytelling bridge between her 1980s roots and the post-Morrison X-Men era. New Mutants vol. 2 was launched in July 2003 by writers Nunzio DeFilippis and Christina Weir, with interior pencils by Keron Grant, as part of the post-Grant Morrison X-Men editorial reshaping at Marvel under editor-in-chief Joe Quesada. The series was designed to bridge old-guard New Mutants characters (Dani Moonstar, Karma, Wolfsbane) into new mentor roles while seeding a fresh generation of student characters at the Xavier Institute. Issue #3 shipped with a cover date of September 2003 and featured a painted cover by Joshua Middleton, who provided covers across the entire 13-issue run. The series concluded in June 2004 and was immediately relaunched as New X-Men: Academy X, expanding the student cast — many of whom made their first appearances in this short-lived volume — into a full ensemble.
