Fallen Angels #2 (cover-dated May 1987) is the single most debut-dense issue of this eight-part New Mutants spin-off: it delivers the first appearances of Ariel (the alien teleporter whose hidden agenda drives the entire series), cyborg Gomi (Alphonsus Lefszycic), his cybernetically enhanced psychic lobsters Bill and Don, and a Madrox Independent Duplicate — a rogue duplication later revealed, via retroactive continuity in X-Factor #75, to have been impersonating the real Jamie Madrox all along. The issue also marks the first full appearance of the Fallen Angels as an assembled team, completing the group formation that issue #1 only began. Beyond its debut count, the book exemplifies late Copper Age Marvel's willingness to people an X-office title with deliberately off-brand characters — a squat cyborg, crustaceans with psychic powers, a Fagin-modeled supervillain as reluctant den mother — and still treat their emotional lives seriously, a tonal experiment that influenced how subsequent X-adjacent limited series handled misfit ensembles.

As the pair grapple with the harsh realities of life on the streets, Siryn and Madrox catch up with Sunspot and Warlock just as they’re drawn into the mysterious fold of the Fallen Angels, a twist that sends Siryn stumbling into a quiet restaurant with no sign of mutants at all.

History

The series grew out of writer Jo Duffy and penciler Kerry Gammill's collaboration under editor Ann Nocenti, working in coordination with the X-office during the simultaneous runs of Chris Claremont on Uncanny X-Men and Louise Simonson on New Mutants and X-Factor. The project was originally titled Misfits — early Marvel house ads appeared under that name before a late rename to Fallen Angels — and was also expanded from a planned six-issue run to eight issues during development. Issue #2 was written by Duffy, penciled by Gammill, and inked by Tom Palmer, representing the creative team at its most consistent before rotating pencilers took over from issue #3 onward; a planned sequel series written by Duffy and drawn by Colleen Doran was fully scripted (two issues completed) but ultimately shelved by Marvel in 1989.
