Bill Gaines
Bill Gaines was the publisher and co-editor of EC Comics, best known for steering the company toward mature, artistically ambitious horror and science fiction titles in the early 1950s. Born William Maxwell Gaines on March 1, 1922, in New York City, he took over the family business after his father’s death and transformed EC into a powerhouse of provocative storytelling. His most famous creation was *Mad* magazine, which he published for more than 40 years, turning it into a cultural institution. Gaines worked closely with artists like Al Feldstein, Wally Wood, and Harvey Kurtzman, co-creating landmark series such as *Tales from the Crypt*, *Weird Fantasy*, *Weird Science*, *Haunt of Fear*, and *Vault of Horror*. These titles pushed boundaries with their sophisticated writing and gruesome, ironic twists, earning a devoted readership and later critical acclaim. Gaines died on June 3, 1992, in New York City. His legacy was cemented with posthumous inductions into the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame in 1993 and the Jack Kirby Hall of Fame in 1997, honoring his role in elevating comics as an art form.
