About the series
Whilce Portacio co-created and illustrated this Image Comics series from 1994 to 1998, which ran for 43 issues and was primarily written by Francis Takenaga, Portacio, and Steven Grant. The book follows a covert team of supernatural operatives—including Rachel Rhodes, Jackson Dane, and Maritza Blackbird—who battle otherworldly threats while grappling with their own monstrous transformations. With its dark, horror-tinged aesthetic and Portacio’s detailed, moody art, Wetworks stood out as a gritty, creator-owned counterpoint to the superhero norm of the era. It remains a key example of Image’s early push for darker, more experimental team books.
