Ultimate X-Men (Vol. 2) was launched as the third title in Marvel's new Ultimate Universe, a line overseen by Jonathan Hickman and born from the 'Ultimate Invasion' limited series by Hickman and Bryan Hitch. Momoko has stated that Editor-in-Chief C.B. Cebulski and Hickman recruited her specifically because they wanted something 'completely new and different,' granting her unusual creative latitude to build a cast almost entirely from scratch and to root the book in Japanese folklore and horror rather than classic X-Men continuity. Issue #15 falls midway through the arc eventually collected in trade as 'Ultimate X-Men by Peach Momoko Vol. 3: The Realm of the Mind' (collecting #13–18), the series' second-year volume. Editors Wil Moss and Michelle Marchese shepherded the issue, with lettering by VC's Travis Lanham.

Issue #15 opens the series' second year of publication, with Marvel's own promotional copy billing it as the start of a 'New Age' chapter for the title.
The central dramatic engine is Hisako Ichiki/Armor's psychological journey through her own inner darkness, which the Shadow King has been manipulating; the Shadow King (in the form of Shinobu Kageyama) sends a telepathic directive to kill Akihiro, a signal that somehow reaches a character named Mori.
The main plot thread follows a new character named Futaba — a mutant investigator with a visual resemblance to a Rogue analogue — and Tatsuya Sainouchi (Kanon's police-officer brother) as they share intelligence about the Children of the Atom cult; the issue ends with Tatsuya agreeing to cooperate with Futaba.
Key Collector Comics lists the standard edition as a non-key issue with no discrete first appearances attributed specifically to #15.
