About this Issue

Ultimate X-Men #14 sits at the dramatic heart of the 'Realm of the Mind' arc, depicting Hisako Ichiki's full possession by the Shadow King and her transformation into 'Dark Armor' — the series' most explicit confrontation yet between its protagonist and the psychic horror that has haunted her since issue #1. As part of Peach Momoko's manga-inflected, Japan-set reimagining of the X-Men on Earth-6160, the issue deepens the series' commitment to superhero-horror storytelling and to centering an almost entirely female ensemble of new Ultimate Universe mutants — a creative departure that critics noted strips away virtually every classic X-Men trope in favor of the franchise's core emotional theme of alienation.

History

The series launched in March 2024 as the third title in Marvel's second Ultimate Universe line, with Peach Momoko — who was born and raised in Japan — handling both plot and art, and Zack Davisson (her Demon Days collaborator) adapting the scripts into English. Issue #14 was edited by Wil Moss with assistant editing by Michelle Marchese, and falls into the second year of the run, collected in the 'Vol. 3: The Realm of the Mind' trade paperback alongside issues #13–18. The series concluded with issue #24 in February 2026.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Published April 2, 2025 (cover-dated June 2025); rated T+; 32 pages.
  • Full creative team: writer/artist Peach Momoko, script by Zack Davisson, letters by Travis Lanham, editor Wil Moss.
  • Central story conflict: Shadow King (Shinobu Kageyama) possesses Hisako Ichiki, rendering her 'Dark Armor'; the issue carries both present-day action and flashback sequences.
  • Supporting cast in this issue includes Maystorm (Mei Igarashi), Nico Minoru, Psylocke (Kanon Sainouchi), Mori, Viper (Aida), Maester (Fujiwara), and Surge (Noriko Ashida) and Natsu Tsukishima appearing via illusion/holographic simulation; Yukio and Futaba appear in cameo.
  • Three cover editions were released simultaneously: the standard Peach Momoko cover, a 1:25 Gurihiru variant, and a Nicoletta Baldari 'Ultimate Special' variant.
  • Issue #14 is part of the 'Realm of the Mind' arc (issues #13–18), later collected in the 'Ultimate X-Men by Peach Momoko Vol. 3: The Realm of the Mind' trade paperback.
  • The series as a whole is set entirely in Japan on Earth-6160 and deliberately omits classic X-Men figures (Professor X, Cyclops, Wolverine, Storm) in favor of an original ensemble built around Armor, Maystorm, and their peers.
  • Many characters listed in the catalog index (e.g., Thor, Iron Man, Rogue, Scarlet Witch, Spider-Man, etc.) are associated with the series' recap/data pages covering the broader Ultimate Universe, not confirmed story appearances within issue #14 itself.
