“The Road of the Eagles”

In "The Road of the Eagles," Conan leads his pirates in a relentless pursuit of the ruthless Turanian general Artaban, seeking vengeance for the slaughter of their wounded. As Artaban rescues the slave girl Roxana and later spares Prince Teyaspa of Turan, Conan forms an uneasy alliance with the exiled Yuetshi chief Vinashko, who reveals a hidden path to the castle of the monstrous Gleg the Zaporoskan. With the fate of Teyaspa and Roxana hanging in the balance, Conan’s quest turns into a deadly test of survival—only to leave him stranded, hunted by unseen horrors, and abandoned by his own crew. Written by Roy Thomas and illustrated with dynamic intensity by John Buscema, with inks by Tony DeZuniga and letters by Joe Rosen, the cover by Earl Norem captures the tale’s grim, mythic tone.

Conan and his pirates chase after the Turanian general Artaban, who has killed their wounded comrades in cold blood. Artaban saves the slave girl Roxana from Hyrkanian reavers, and she quickly talks him into saving Prince Teyaspa of Turan, who is being held prisoner in the castle of Gleg the Zaporoskan. Meanwhile, Conan befriends Vinashko, a former Yuetshi chief who shows Conan a secret passage to Gleg's castle, where Conan finds and kills Artaban. In despair, Roxana kills Teyaspa and then herself. Chased by demons, Conan escapes only to find that the pirates have abandoned him.
