Conan the Barbarian #1 (1982) features the iconic warrior Conan in a tale titled "Jenseits des schwarzen Flusses," drawn by John Buscema with inks by Tony DeZuniga and Alfredo Alcalá, and lettered by Doris Ballmann. The cover, also by Earl Norem, depicts Conan in his classic form, set against a dramatic backdrop.
In "Die Legionen des Todes," young Conan joins Jarl Njal’s band of Aesir on a perilous mission into Hyperborea to rescue Njal’s daughter, Rann, taken by the Witch-men. After a scouting party is brutally captured and tortured in the Haloga fort, Conan infiltrates the stronghold, rescues Rann, and triggers a deadly pursuit by the undead legion summoned by Queen Vammatar—leading to a harrowing separation as Rann flees and Conan is taken prisoner.
