Tom DeFalco and Ron Frenz had taken over scripting and penciling Amazing Spider-Man by mid-1984, and this issue arrives as the concluding chapter of the Alien Costume Saga that began in #252. The decision to give Mary Jane a full origin here was DeFalco's way of grounding her renewed presence in the title: she had re-entered Peter's life as a noticeably more serious character after years of absence, and her revelation in #257–258 that she had always known Peter was Spider-Man demanded an in-kind disclosure from her side. Editor Danny Fingeroth oversaw the issue under editor-in-chief Jim Shooter, and the creative team's cover — penciled and inked by Frenz and Rubinstein — is a deliberate homage to the cover of Iron Man #126, which was itself an homage to Tales of Suspense #39.

- Spider-Man formally returns to his original red-and-blue costume in this issue, having been separated from the alien symbiote suit by Reed Richards in the previous issue (#258).
- The Hobgoblin — later confirmed in Spider-Man: Hobgoblin Lives #3 to be Roderick Kingsley — appears here demanding a share of criminal operations citywide as part of a new alliance with the Rose (Richard Fisk).
