Sonic the Hedgehog #13
Sonic the Hedgehog #13 marks the first appearance of Knuckles the Echidna in any American comic book, bridging Sega's then-new Genesis game Sonic the Hedgehog 3 with the Archie continuity just months after the game's release. The debut cemented Knuckles as a permanent fixture of the Archie universe and laid the foundation for his own 32-issue ongoing series, multiple miniseries, and years of mythology-building that would define a significant chapter of the book's history. Because that mythology was eventually the subject of a major legal dispute between Archie and writer Ken Penders — culminating in a full continuity reboot in 2013 — this issue sits at the origin point of one of the most consequential story threads in the series' entire 290-issue run. Its reprint in the Sonic Firsts anthology and inclusion in the Sonic Mega Collection video game also gave the issue an unusually wide reach beyond the direct-market audience.
In "The Island Hedgehog," Sonic and Tails are caught in a cunning trap set by Dr. Robotnik, who manipulates them into clashing with Knuckles, the enigmatic guardian of the Floating Island. With the Chaos Emeralds at stake and tensions rising, the fate of the island hangs in the balance. Written by Mike Kanterovich and Ken Penders, with art by Dave Manak and inks by Jon D'Agostino, this 1994 issue delivers high-stakes action and classic Archie Sonic energy. The cover, by Dave Manak and Jon D'Agostino, captures the moment of confrontation with bold, dynamic flair.

The lead story, 'This Island Hedgehog,' was written by Ken Penders and Mike Kanterovich and pencilled by Dave Manak, with inks by Jon D'Agostino; the backup story, 'Space In Yo' Face,' was written by Angelo DeCesare and pencilled by Art Mawhinney. The issue nearly did not reach print as originally planned: according to Penders, Sega of America instructed the team at the last minute to pull the Knuckles story because Sega of Japan had not yet finalized long-term plans for the character, but editor Scott Fulop held firm — pointing out that the financial cost of a last-minute swap would fall on Sega — and the story went to press unchanged. A separate behind-the-scenes detail reported by penciller Patrick Spaziante is that Knuckles's dialogue was originally written and lettered in a Jamaican accent, mirroring early internal Sega concepts for the character, but editor Fulop removed the accent at Sega and Archie's request before publication.
