Sonic the Hedgehog #106
☆ Be the first to review + Add to your collection — Join freeSonic the Hedgehog #106 marks the first appearance of Lara-Su (operating undercover as 'Jani-Ca'), the future daughter of Knuckles and Julie-Su, a time-traveling echidna character conceived by Ken Penders whose arc across issues #106–109 introduced one of the Archie continuity's earliest sustained 'possible future' storylines. The issue simultaneously advances Princess Sally's role as Knothole's inaugural diplomatic envoy — her first official mission to Station Square — deepening the comic's ongoing experiment with political and societal storytelling that distinguished Karl Bollers' lead-writer tenure from the action-comedy roots of the series' early years. Though later sources clarified that the version of Lara-Su appearing here inhabits a distinct alternate reality from the later 'Mobius: 25 Years Later' arc, her debut in this issue seeded a thread that would weave through Penders' final years on the book and eventually feed into his post-Archie creative endeavors. It also carries the minor but notable distinction of being the last issue in which Station Square's Mayor Bullyani is mentioned, quietly closing one small chapter of the comic's post-Sonic Adventure world-building.

Issue #106 was produced under the dual-writer arrangement typical of the Bollers/Penders era: Karl Bollers scripted the lead story ('Crouching Hedgehog, Hidden Dragon' Part One), while Ken Penders authored the back-up strip set on the Floating Island, with J. F. Gabrie serving as editor. Penders' contribution introduced Lara-Su, a character whose rough concept design he originated and whose name — combining 'Lara' from Knuckles' mother Lara-Le and 'Su' from his partner Julie-Su — embedded her firmly in the Penders-built echidna mythology. The issue launched a 2002 in which the series published thirteen issues exclusively in its main title, a pattern that had also held the prior year, reflecting a period of reduced publishing output before a secondary Sonic title eventually returned.
Trivia · 8 facts
- First appearance of Lara-Su (alias 'Jani-Ca'), the future daughter of Knuckles the Echidna and Julie-Su from an alternate future timeline, who time-travels to the present to prevent what she believes will be Knuckles' assassination.
- Lead story 'Crouching Hedgehog, Hidden Dragon' Part One written by Karl Bollers; back-up story by Ken Penders; edited by J. F. Gabrie.
- Princess Sally undertakes her first official diplomatic mission as Knothole Village's ambassador, traveling to Station Square to negotiate asylum for Overlander refugees from Robotropolis.
- Chaos Knuckles reverses the effects of the Quantum Beam during the back-up story, repopulating Echidnaopolis — the backdrop against which Lara-Su makes her entrance.
- The lead story's title is a play on the then-recent film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon; the Chinese text included in the issue mistranslates 'hedgehog' as 'porcupine' — an error repeated in the following issue.
- Lara-Su's teleportation arrival into Echidnaopolis was designed to evoke the time-travel effect from the film The Terminator, per in-comic wiki documentation.
- This is the final issue in which Mayor Bullyani of Station Square is mentioned.
- The issue includes an in-comic 'Sega Data Files' feature with a two-page Station Square diagram and historical factsheet, part of an ongoing effort to integrate game-world lore into the comic's continuity.
