Issue #64 was co-written by Karl Bollers and Ken Penders, a pairing that defined much of the book's 1997–2000 period and was frequently marked by creative tension between the two. Bollers, who had joined the title at #51 and was ascending toward the head-writer role, introduced Nate Morgan here — adapting a concept-stage character from the Sonic SatAM television show's writers' bible, where he had been envisioned as a wizard-like figure planned for the never-produced third season. Bollers reworked the character into a diminutive Overlander scientist rather than a sorcerer, planting him in a story arc alongside Penders' ongoing 'Tales of the Freedom Fighters' backup, illustrating the often-parallel-tracks structure the two writers maintained within the same issue.
