About this Issue

Savage Dragon #93 is the narrative engine at the heart of the four-part 'Reclaim the Earth' storyline, the sequence in which Erik Larsen brought his years-long CyberFace world-domination arc to a crisis point by staging Dragon's assault on the White House itself. The issue packs in an extraordinary number of in-continuity deaths — HellRazor, Bad Axe, Soundstorm, the Possessor, and EXROE-5 all meet their ends here — making it one of the highest-casualty single chapters in the series' run to that point. Beyond body count, the issue is structurally significant for dramatizing Dragon's morally uncomfortable alliance with Vicious Circle villains, a theme Larsen had been building since CyberFace seized global power, and the issue's White House raid gave the series a rare sense of escalating, world-altering stakes that distinguished Savage Dragon from most of its contemporaries.

History

The issue was produced entirely by Erik Larsen as writer, penciler, and inker — consistent with his founding commitment to sole creative authorship on the title — with Reuben Rude and Abel Mouton sharing coloring duties and Chris Eliopoulos handling lettering. It also carried two back-up features: a 'Savage Tales' strip written and drawn by Nick Derington with Brian Blake, noted as outside regular continuity, plus Chris Giarrusso's 'Comic Bits' and a 'Savage Dragonbert' strip by Karl H. The issue was cover-dated November 2001 and shipped in early 2002 per Image's release records.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Part 2 of the four-part 'Reclaim the Earth' arc (issues #92–95), subtitled 'America's Fighting Force,' in which Dragon teleports a rebel coalition through the Void and into the White House grounds to confront CyberFace.
  • HellRazor — a Vicious Circle member present since the original miniseries — dies in this issue, stabbed through the heart by SkullFace during the White House battle.
  • The Possessor (Simon Kane, first appearance Savage Dragon #55) is killed when CyberFace's robot drones shoot off his head mid-battle.
  • EXROE-5 (first appearance Savage Dragon #53), the android guardian of the Creator's facility, is disassembled on Dragon's orders early in the issue, allowing the Possessor to be mobilized as a weapon.
  • Bad Axe is shot through the head by Dragon after threatening an unconscious SuperPatriot; Soundstorm is gunned down by CyberFace's robots — making this issue the death issue for at least five named characters.
  • SkullFace (real name David Gorelick) uses the chaos of the White House raid to stab and kill his own leader HellRazor, beginning his own bid for power within the Vicious Circle.
  • Erik Larsen served as sole story and art creator, with colors by Reuben Rude and Abel Mouton and lettering by Chris Eliopoulos; back-up material was contributed by Nick Derington, Brian Blake, Chris Giarrusso, and Karl H.
  • The broader 'Reclaim the Earth' arc and surrounding issues have been collected in Image Comics' ongoing Savage Dragon trade paperback and Archives reprint program.
