About this Issue

Savage Dragon #74 is the pivotal climax of Erik Larsen's long-burning Covenant of the Sword saga, paying off threads that stretch back to the Dragon's wedding-day trauma in issue #62 and his son's apparent death in issue #33. Most significantly, it delivers Dragon's first face-to-face encounter with his toddler son Malcolm — a reunion whose emotional weight would define the series' next phase and, years later, Malcolm's own run as the title character. The issue also delivers the first appearances of Janey (Widow's daughter, later 'Wall-Crawler') and Sharona Runningbear (Alternate), both of whom would become recurring fixtures of the Savage Dragon extended cast.

History

The issue was written, penciled, and inked entirely by series creator Erik Larsen, with lettering by Chris Eliopoulos — the same creative unit that had steered the book since the mid-90s under Larsen's fully creator-owned, single-author model at Image Comics. It sits near the end of a multi-year Covenant of the Sword storyline that Larsen had been building across dozens of issues, and it was positioned as direct setup for the landmark revamp in issue #75. The backup strip 'Savage Dragonbert' by Swedish cartoonist Karl Hörnell, a recurring comedic feature running through issues #57–99, also appears here.
