Marvel Masterworks: The Amazing Spider-Man #25
In "The Spectacular Spider-Kid!", Peter David and Sal Buscema deliver a delightfully absurd twist on the classic hero sidekick trope, as Spider-Man’s unexpected rescue of Toad sparks an unlikely chain of events. When Toad attempts to prove himself by orchestrating a gang attack—only to be foiled by Frog-Man and a mysterious new hero called Spider-Kid—the three misfits bond over their shared outsider status and form the Misfits. Ron Frenz’s dynamic cover captures the chaos, while Joe Rubinstein’s inks and Oliver and Yomtov’s vibrant colors bring the zany energy to life. Spider-Man, ever the reluctant mentor, simply walks away—leaving the future of this bizarre team wide open.

Spider-Man saves Toad from committing suicide, and Toad decides to try to become his sidekick. Spider-Man blows him off until the next day, and Toad recruits a gang of thugs to attack Spider-Man so he can show his worth to the web slinger. Frog-Man gets wise to the plot and shows up to help out. So does Spider-Kid. Finding a point of commonality amongst themselves, Toad, Frog-Man and Spider-Kid decide to become a new super team: the Misfits. Shaking his head in disbelief, Spider-Man is all too happy to simply walk away from the ludicrous situation.
