“Once Upon a Time, There Was a Robot”

This June 1985 reprint from Marvel's "Collector's Item Classic" line puts Spider-Man through the wringer twice over, and the cover by Steve Ditko says it all. A half-human, half-mechanical face looms large above two split scenes — on the left, Spidey is entangled by writhing green tentacles amid leaping flames, while on the right a sleek robot has him pinned beneath a staff as strange tendrils curl at its feet. Stan Lee and Steve Ditko's story "Once Upon a Time, There Was a Robot" promises exactly the kind of inventive, boundary-pushing adventure that made their Spider-Man collaborations so memorable.
